Giving the Gift of Sight in India

On 28 June, Collective Minds Foundation visited the Bridgestone Sarthi Support Center and Nirman in Nigadi, Maharashtra, India. During this visit, we were proud to donate a tonometer, a device used to measure eye pressure, that will help to protect the sight of truck drivers across the region.

This donation was made possible thanks to XL Optiek and Jurjen Veldhoen. We are deeply grateful for their generosity and commitment.

Why eye pressure matters

Glaucoma is a growing eye condition, particularly in countries such as India. One of its key risk factors is high eye pressure, which often develops without any noticeable symptoms. Left undetected, it can lead to permanent and irreversible loss of vision.

In the Netherlands, measuring eye pressure is a routine part of eye care, as familiar as being fitted for a new pair of glasses. In many parts of India, this kind of screening is far less accessible, which makes early detection all the more important.

Supporting those on the road

The Bridgestone Sarthi Support Center and Nirman provide screening and support services for truck drivers, who spend long hours on the road and rely heavily on their vision. With the donated tonometer, the centre can now measure eye pressure on site and offer appropriate guidance for further treatment when needed.

For these drivers, this means that potential problems can be identified early, before they become a threat to their sight.

Looking ahead

We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the eye health of truck drivers in the region, and we look forward to future collaborations that create a positive impact on the communities we serve.
